National Dog Day

August 26

We love our dogs and they love us. For that, we’re eternally grateful. National Dog Day honors this most loyal and adorable creature. After all, we have a long history together. The dog’s evolution into man’s best friend goes back at least 14,000 years (and probably longer), when they split from wolves to become more lovable, domesticated animals. Since then, the bond between people and dogs has transcended time and culture to become an integral part of humanity itself. We would have it no other way. One thing’s for sure — we’re so glad that people and pooches joined forces all those years ago. So on August 26, gaze upon the cute dog videos flooding social media because it’s time to celebrate man’s best (and oldest) friend!

WHEN IS NATIONAL DOG DAY?

National Dog Day falls on August 26th every year, including 2019. So you can spend less time checking the calendar, and more time showering your furry best friend with special treats!

NATIONAL DOG DAY ACTIVITIES

1. Take Your Pup to a “Yappy Hour”
Several dog-friendly restaurants and bakeries host an occasional “yappy hour” — a time where you can enjoy a meal or some treats with your favorite people and pets.

2. Treat Yourself To Some Quality Puppy Love
Hugs and kisses and snuggles, oh my. Give them a nice belly rub, squeeze them tight, and let them slobber all they want today. Dogs help reduce stress, anxiety, and depression — so puppy love is good for your health too!

3. Host a Dog Party
Plan a gathering with a couple of your dog’s favorite friends. It could be a big play date at your local dog beach or a party at your local dog park. Get creative. Include pet-friendly decorations, party favors, hats, and top it off with a dog-friendly dessert!

WHY WE LOVE NATIONAL DOG DAY

A. The Lift our Spirits
Dogs are natural mood elevators. There’s also an overwhelming amount of research that shows they reduce stress levels. If you’re burned out from a tough day at the office or just having a bad day overall, dogs are always there to greet you with joy when you return home. Maybe there should be a mandatory “bring your dog to work” day!

B. They Teach Us Valuable Life Lessons
Dogs remind us to stick to things we love. They let us know we shouldn’t take life too seriously. They also don’t jump into any commitments without first sniffing out the situation, but once they realize it’s okay they engage. Take notes. They are definitely onto something.

C. They Keep Us Socially Connected
Whether you’re taking them for a walk around the block or running into friends at the dog beach, your dog’s presence helps us develop friendships and social support. They make us more approachable, while encouraging us to mingle with other dogs and dog lovers. Who knew your dog would make the perfect wingman?
