SUMMARY:National Mutt Day
DESCRIPTION:Let’s throw this day to the dogs! Not just any dog\, though. Today\, we toast to the mixed breeds of the world\, so raise your water bowls high … because this one’s for the mutts! There’s no ifs\, ands\, or mutts about it — December 2 is National Mutt Day\, and we’re here to celebrate. In fact\, we love this day so much\, we celebrate it twice year. The next National Mutt Day is July 31!  \n\n\nNATIONAL MUTT DAY ACTIVITIES\n  \n1. Volunteer at your local shelter\nAnimal shelters are always looking for volunteers\, and you’d make a great one! Check in with your local rescue to see how you can get involved. \n  \n2. Offer to dog-sit for a friend\nChances are\, you’ve got plenty of mutts in your life. While every dog owner loves their pet\, they’d probably still appreciate a day off. \n  \n3. Adopt a mutt\nThe ultimate way to celebrate this holiday! If you’ve been thinking about getting a dog\, open up your heart to a mutt and you won’t regret it. \n  \n\n\nWHY WE LOVE NATIONAL MUTT DAY\n  \nA. It encourages adoption of mixed-breed dogs\nThis is what National Mutt Day’s all about! While all dogs at shelters need adopting\, purebred dogs tend to have much better luck\, so mutts often end up being left out to dry. \n  \nB. They’ve got the best temperaments\nMost purebreds were bred for specific traits\, so they’re likely to have a more extreme personality. Mutts\, on the other hand\, have a blend of traits from different sources\, which often leads to a more mellow mood. In fact\, purebred dogs are more likely than mutts to have genetic disorders\, including cataracts and hypothyroidism. \n  \nC. They’re all so different\nWith all the dog breed combinations out there\, there are a nearly an infinite amount of possibilities. Just think about it this way: 4-digit combination locks have ten thousand combinations\, and there are over 300 breeds of dogs. You can [try to] do the math.

SUMMARY:National Cook For Your Pets Day
DESCRIPTION:Our pets give us unconditional love\, companionship\, and attention\, so it’s the least we can do to return their efforts on National Cook For Your Pets Day on November 1! While we tend to feed our pets with foodbought from the store\, spending a day cooking for our pet is more than just a nice way to honor their place in our lives. By consulting with the vet about what foods to avoid and what foods might nourish the pet best\, we’ll gain new insights into our animals’ diets and ultimately\, become better at caring for our animals. So take this day to cook a delicious meal for your pets! \n  \n\nNATIONAL COOK FOR YOUR PETS DAY ACTIVITIES\n  \n1. Check your ingredient list\nChecking with your vet is the best way to learn what foods to avoid giving your pet\, but the big no-nos are anything milk-based\, chocolate\, avocados\, nuts\, onions\, leeks\, chives\, mushrooms\, and walnuts. Your pet’s digestion is pretty fragile\, so it’s important not to risk renal failure by trying to do something nice for the animal! Also\, it should go without saying\, but seriously\, avoid giving your pet alcohol. It can be lethal for animals in any dose. \n  \n2. Get cooking \nA dog likes a nice bowl of mixed cooked protein\, vegetables and rice. Together with fresh fruit\, and the occasional chew for healthy teeth\, feeding a dog home-cooked food isn’t as complex as you might think. A cat\, meanwhile\, is exclusively carnivorous\, so you’ll be looking at giving the animal a nice piece of protein. \n  \n3. Buy a pet cookbook\nJulia Child would probably be horrified to learn that there are an increasing number of pet cookbooks on the market\, but it’s true. Often\, they’re written in the personas of the animals doing the eating\, and it’s a creative and hilarious new trend for you to explore. One word of caution: A 2013 study by U.C. Davis researchers showed that many homemade recipes lacked the necessary nutrition\, so it’s important to ensure that your recipe book does meet your pet’s needs\, or that you’re just using the recipes as supplements to a more balanced diet. \n  \n\n\nWHY WE LOVE NATIONAL COOK FOR YOUR PETS DAY\n  \nA. Our pets keep us healthy\nThere are many health benefits from owning a pet\, from lower blood pressure and encouraging us to take physical exercise to fewer incidents of mental health issues like anxiety and depression. Since our pets do so much for our health\, it’s only right that we should attempt to understand a little more what is good for theirs! And not to sound too selfish either\, but if our pets are healthier\, they’ll be around longer. So that’s good for everyone. \n  \nB. Doing a good thing feels great\nWe feed our pets every day with some kibble in a bowl or maybe a can on the counter. But taking a little extra time to give your pet something healthy and delicious will make both of you feel good! Even animals delight in small acts of kindness! \n  \nC. Reflecting on your pet’s diet will help you\, too\nThinking about what to cook for you pet might also make you rethink your own diet\, too! Thinking about what to cook for Fido but finding that you wouldn’t want to give him most of what you eat because you’re not sure it’s healthy? Wake-up call! Also\, remember\, dogs don’t judge\, so if you’re just learning to cook\, then you’ll get some validation here. And most of us could use some validation in the kitchen.

SUMMARY:Pets for Vets Day
DESCRIPTION:It all started with a dog named Bear. Bear was quite the ham and knew how to interact differently based on the individual needs of the Veterans. He would lie quietly on the bed if needed or put his paws up to encourage others. This led many Veterans to ask if they could take Bear home with them.  Bear’s owner thought\, “why is therapy one hour a week inside when it could be 24/7 at home?” Since Bear was spoken for\, his owner thought she could help more veterans find their own Bear to help them rehabilitate. \n\nPETS FOR VETS DAY ACTIVITIES\n  \n1. Visit a Shelter\nVisit a shelter and offer to pay the adoption fee for a Veteran. \n  \n2. Toy Collection\nCollect dog/cat toys and donate them to a local shelter. \n  \n3. Say Thank You\nVisit a VA facility and thank the Veterans. \n  \n\n\nWHY WE LOVE PETS FOR VETS DAY\n  \nA. Remembering Vets\nIt’s important to remember and honor our Veterans as often as possible \n  \nB. Raise Pet Awareness\nIt raises awareness of how many animals in shelters could make wonderful pets \n  \nC. Mental Health Benefit of Having a Pet\nIt emphasizes the benefits animals provide on a daily basis.

SUMMARY:National Pet Obesity Day
DESCRIPTION:When the pooch starts getting a little plump\, you know it’s time for a few things. More walks\, less table scraps\, and perhaps even an additional visit to the vet to make sure it’s still healthy. But while a rotund Rover can be a cute or funny sight\, that extra layer for lovin’ can have some serious consequences. Thanks to National Pet Obesity Day on October 12\, we can now all learn more about this problem among our beloved pets. \n  \nCurrently more than half of all domestic dogs and cats are clinically overweight\, which is to say their body condition score is above a four. That amounts to nearly 49 million dogs and more than 50 million cats who are a bit portlier than their peers. This can lead to serious health issues for these animals\, but the good news is that pet obesity can be easily prevented by taking a few cautionary steps. Thanks to the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention (APOP)\, we can now all learn what it takes to keep our furry friends healthy and happy. \n  \n\nHOW TO OBSERVE NATIONAL PET OBESITY DAY\n  \n1. Identify if your pet needs help\nThere are several ways to find out for certain if you need to put your pet on a restrictive diet. One of the easiest is to consult the resources offered by APOP\, which include easy to use at-home body condition tests. Sometimes\, we may not even be aware when our pets become overweight\, so it’s important to know at what point it becomes a medical problem. \n  \n2. Take part in the survey\nEvery year\, APOP conducts a survey on National Pet Obesity Awareness Day\, which helps collect data from around the country. This information is then used to create a snapshot of the state of pet obesity\, and help put together a plan to tackle it. By taking part in the survey\, you’re doing your part to help take on this challenging issue. \n  \n3. Take your dog for a walk or to the dog park\nIf you’ve been neglecting getting your dog out of the house\, make today the day to go for a walk around the neighborhood. Give it freedom to romp and sniff\, and run if given the opportunity. Or even better\, head to the local dog park\, where it can socialize with other dogs and run off-leash for great\, sustained exercise. \n  \n\n\nWHY NATIONAL PET OBESITY DAY IS IMPORTANT\n  \nA. Obesity is a growing risk\nFor years APOP has been conducting surveys to determine the state of health our pets are in\, and unfortunately\, it has determined that our pet obesity problem is only getting worse. In 2013\, cats were heavier than ever\, and the rate of overweight cats and dogs has grown slightly over the years. That’s why it’s so important to raise awareness of how to keep our pets slim and spry. \n  \nB. Obesity causes serious health issues\nObesity in pets means more than just lazy animals. APOP data show obesity leads to reduced life expectancy\, diminished quality of life\, chronic inflammation\, orthopedic disease\, kidney dysfunction\, respiratory disorders\, cancer\, and more. To give our pets the best life possible\, we have to help them avoid packing a few extra pounds. \n  \nC. It spreads knowledge\nThanks to making it a national holiday\, pet owners are now armed with the tools and information they need to keep their dog or cat healthy. APOP offers several resources\, including at-home body condition tests\, questions to ask the vet\, pet caloric needs\, ideal weight ranges\, and more. By spreading this information\, APOP hopes to significantly reduce the number of obese pets in the near future.

SUMMARY:National Black Dog Day
DESCRIPTION:Most of us know about the longstanding superstitions regarding black cats: that they’re bad omens\, harbingers of rotten luck\, etc. But did you know that the same stigma surrounds black dogs? It’s true\, and it means many black dogs languish in shelters because people are hesitant to adopt them. National Black Dog Day\, celebrated each year on October 1\, seeks to change that. We love black dogs! Their shiny coats are like satin\, especially when you’re out playing in the warm sunshine. Let’s learn some more\, dog!  \nNATIONAL BLACK DOG DAY ACTIVITIES\n  \n1. Adopt a black dog\nThe good news: There are plenty of black dogs to choose from at a shelter near you. The bad news: It’s because of so-called “Black Dog Syndrome” — that often unconscious phenomenon that leads to fewer black dogs being adopted. \n  \n2. Let others know\, too\nMany people are actively looking to adopt a dog. Spread the word about the plight of these black beauties so that people may be more inspired to adopt a black dog. \n  \n3. Dispel the myths\nMany people pass over black dogs at animal shelters\, preferring to take home animals with lighter coats. That means black dogs are more likely to be put down. This is often because people have a negative association with black dogs\, regardless of breed. \n  \nWHY WE LOVE NATIONAL BLACK DOG DAY\n  \nA. Dogs are humans’ best friends\nThey’ve been bred for thousands of years to love and to serve us. That’s why they quiver with excitement when they see their human buddies heading their way. \n  \nB. Black dogs are beautiful\nWe love dogs of all colors. Black\, tan\, white\, patched\, brindled\, marbled. But there’s something special — classic\, even — about a jet-black pooch that sets them apart from the pack. \n  \nC. Sheltered black dogs are unfairly overlooked\nBlack dogs are often the least-adoptable pets in shelters\, simply because of their color. This is sometimes\, but not always\, the result of superstition. Some people think black means bad or evil\, so they opt to adopt an animal with a lighter-colored coat.

SUMMARY:National Dogs in Politics Day
DESCRIPTION:It was a moment in history when a single dog changed the course of a presidential election\, revolutionized how politicians connect with voters\, and helped usher in a new era in political speeches. Today\, on September 23\, we mark this occasion by celebrating National Dogs in Politics Day\, while also commemorating some of the greatest political pooches our country has ever known.  \nDubbed the “Checkers Speech\,” Richard Nixon spoke to some 60 million viewers via TV on September 23\, 1952\, to refute charges that he had abused campaign contributions. By alluding to a dog that someone had given his family\, Nixon was able to gain the trust of the public\, make the charges against him seem absurd\, and stay on the Eisenhower ticket as Vice President. All because of a black and white cocker spaniel. \n  \nDogs have been in the White House as long as presidents have\, but can you name a single one? Let’s take the day to remember the canine candidates and pawed politicians through the ages. \n  \n\n\nNATIONAL DOGS IN POLITICS DAY ACTIVITIES\n  \n1. Read the Checkers Speech\nRegarded as a turning point in American political oratory\, the Checkers Speech demonstrates how easily attention can be diverted from one topic or issue to another. In a single speech\, Nixon once again had the trust of the public\, and it’s a speech orators have been studying ever since. \n  \n2. Learn about a few delegate doggies\nAccording to one of the leading Washington DC PR Firms\, while President Trump has no pets\, virtually every president before him has brought a loving companion into the White House. George Washington had a gang of foxhounds\, coonhounds\, and greyhounds\, while Teddy Roosevelt had a small zoo of animals\, including several dogs. Look through these lists and see which presidents’ pets you think are best. \n  \n3. Dress up your dog\nGet creative by making a quick costume for your pup. You can go old school with a monocle and top hat\, or give it an 80’s suit a la Ronald Reagan. Take some photos\, share it on social media with the appropriate hashtags and let the laughter ensue. \n  \n\n\nWHY WE LOVE NATIONAL DOGS IN POLITICS DAY\n  \nA. The public loves a good presidential puppy\nFor decades\, the press has had a field day reporting on the types of dogs presidents bring into the White House and what it could possibly say about their character. President George Bush owned two Scottish Terriers\, while President Barack Obama favored Portuguese Water Dogs. We’ll leave the analysis up to you. \n  \nB. It lightens a heavy topic\nYour grandmother always told you to stay away from talking politics or religion at the dinner table\, but that doesn’t mean the dogs are out of play. Keeping pets in the mix of conversation can keep the mood light\, allowing you to have civil discussions with no risk of mashed potatoes flying across the table. \n  \nC. Dogs have played a part in American politics for years\nDogs have been an integral part of shaping American politics if only through their successes in wartime. In virtually every war America has been a part of\, dogs have been used to varying degrees to get the mission done. Without their help\, who knows if the country would look the same as it does now.

SUMMARY:National Dog Day
DESCRIPTION:We love our dogs and they love us. For that\, we’re eternally grateful. National Dog Day honors this most loyal and adorable creature. After all\, we have a long history together. The dog’s evolution into man’s best friend goes back at least 14\,000 years (and probably longer)\, when they split from wolves to become more lovable\, domesticated animals. Since then\, the bond between people and dogs has transcended time and culture to become an integral part of humanity itself. We would have it no other way. One thing’s for sure — we’re so glad that people and pooches joined forces all those years ago. So on August 26\, gaze upon the cute dog videos flooding social media because it’s time to celebrate man’s best (and oldest) friend!  \n\n\nWHEN IS NATIONAL DOG DAY?\n  \nNational Dog Day falls on August 26th every year\, including 2019. So you can spend less time checking the calendar\, and more time showering your furry best friend with special treats! \n  \n\nNATIONAL DOG DAY ACTIVITIES\n1. Take Your Pup to a “Yappy Hour”\nSeveral dog-friendly restaurants and bakeries host an occasional “yappy hour” — a time where you can enjoy a meal or some treats with your favorite people and pets. \n  \n2. Treat Yourself To Some Quality Puppy Love\nHugs and kisses and snuggles\, oh my. Give them a nice belly rub\, squeeze them tight\, and let them slobber all they want today. Dogs help reduce stress\, anxiety\, and depression — so puppy love is good for your health too! \n  \n3. Host a Dog Party\nPlan a gathering with a couple of your dog’s favorite friends. It could be a big play date at your local dog beach or a party at your local dog park. Get creative. Include pet-friendly decorations\, party favors\, hats\, and top it off with a dog-friendly dessert! \n  \n\n\nWHY WE LOVE NATIONAL DOG DAY\n  \nA. The Lift our Spirits\nDogs are natural mood elevators. There’s also an overwhelming amount of research that shows they reduce stress levels. If you’re burned out from a tough day at the office or just having a bad day overall\, dogs are always there to greet you with joy when you return home. Maybe there should be a mandatory “bring your dog to work” day! \n  \nB. They Teach Us Valuable Life Lessons\nDogs remind us to stick to things we love. They let us know we shouldn’t take life too seriously. They also don’t jump into any commitments without first sniffing out the situation\, but once they realize it’s okay they engage. Take notes. They are definitely onto something. \n  \nC. They Keep Us Socially Connected\nWhether you’re taking them for a walk around the block or running into friends at the dog beach\, your dog’s presence helps us develop friendships and social support. They make us more approachable\, while encouraging us to mingle with other dogs and dog lovers. Who knew your dog would make the perfect wingman?

SUMMARY:DOGust Universal Birthday for Shelter Dogs

August 1 is celebrated as the Universal Birthday for Shelter Dogs. SUMMARY:National Spoil Your Dog Day
DESCRIPTION:We really love dogs\, and National Spoil Your Dog Day is the ultimate in making our love of dogs official. Dogs bring a lot to our lives\, and while they might not be the most independent creatures to invite into your home\, they don’t ask us for very much in return for all their doggy goodness. Dogs make us laugh\, love us unconditionally\, and they’re happy to clean up any food we happen to drop on the floor. (They might even help clean up the food you’ve left on the table!) In exchange\, all our dogs want is a warm bed\, a few belly rubs\, and maybe a couple walks in the park. But National Spoil Your Dog Day is all about showering man’s best friend with appreciation for all the friendship we’ve enjoyed in their company. Whether you’ve got a tiny toy pug or a giant English mastiff\, this holiday is your chance to break the day to day rules of endearment and really go all-out to show your dog just how much you love him (or her). For National Spoil Your Dog Day on August 10\, give your dog a bone\, leash up\, and join us to celebrate our wonderful canine companions. \n  \n\nNATIONAL SPOIL YOUR DOG DAY ACTIVITIES\n  \n1. Dole out the treats\nWhat dog doesn’t love treats? But dog owners know that too many treats can be a bad thing. On this special day\, break the rules and spoil your dog with as many treats as you want. You can keep it healthy by adding in some natural treats like carrots\, salmon skin\, or coconut oil. Some human foods aren’t good for dogs\, so be sure to consult your veterinarian before sharing from your plate. \n  \n2. Do some doggy activities\nAll dogs love walks\, but that’s just one of the many activities you can do on National Spoil Your Dog Day. Instead of walking around the block\, you could take your dog to the dog park to socialize with other dogs while you walk. Some parks host dog-related events\, especially on dog holidays\, or you can organize your own dog party to get together with your dog-spoiling friends. Not your scene? Take your dog to a pet spa and let the spoiling really begin! \n  \n3. Love your dog\nIn all honesty\, dogs don’t really care what you do with them\, as long as you’re spending time together. Nobody knows your dog like you do\, so take a moment to consider the things your dog loves best. Give your dog a great belly rub and snuggle up on the couch for a movie marathon if that’s what your pooch enjoys. Go down to the waterfront or fill up a backyard kiddie pool if your dog loves to splash around. Whatever your dog’s favorite together-time\, you can deliver it with a little thought and some heartfelt appreciation for what your dog adds to your life. \n  \n\n\nWHY WE LOVE NATIONAL SPOIL YOUR DOG DAY\n  \nA. So much love\, so little time\nThe sad truth about dogs is that they don’t live as long as humans. But somehow\, dogs pack a lifetime of love and licks into little over a decade. Dogs love us without question\, and they never complain about our busy schedules or the taste of their food. For all the love\, companionship\, and straight-up adoration our dogs lavish upon us\, don’t you think they deserve a day of getting spoiled in return? \n  \nB. Their cute faces\nWhether you’ve got one shih-tzu or a pack of lively mutts\, there’s just something about their doggy faces that makes your heart go all warm and fuzzy. Maybe it’s all the love in their big brown eyes\, or maybe it’s that funny way their ears flop inside-out sometimes. Every dog is unique\, but there’s always that special something that makes your dog special to you. Whatever the quirks that you love about your dog\, we love that every dog has quirks to love. \n  \nC. It’s the perfect excuse to spoil your dog\nOkay\, so a lot of us don’t really need an excuse to spoil our dogs. But dog owners know that too much spoiling can lead to bad health or behavioral problems. For a lot of dog owners\, it’s less about when to spoil their dogs and more about how to keep from spoiling them too much. National Spoil Your Dog Day is the perfect time to pamper our pets\, and by concentrating a lot of our spoiling on a single day\, we leave room for our dogs to enjoy a more balanced lifestyle overall.

SUMMARY:Work Like a Dog Day
DESCRIPTION:It may be a dog eat dog kind of world out there\, which can force you to work like a dog even during the dog days of summer. Okay\, that’s enough dog idioms in one sentence. Inspired by the strong work ethic of canines\, especially service dogs\, Work Like a Dog Day is meant to honor people who put in that extra bit of hard work. Celebrated on August 5\, the day is an opportunity to appreciate the hard workers around you (or rant about the unfairness of the capitalist system and life\, in general). Whatever your sentiments are about the day\, we have got some fun ideas to observe this unusual holiday. \n  \nWORK LIKE A DOG DAY ACTIVITIES\n  \n1. Put in Some Extra Hours Toward Your Goal\nYour boss might not notice you putting in extra effort at work but that shouldn’t stop you from working hard. Be inspired by the day and work a little extra towards your personal goals. \n  \n2. Remember you local law enforcement\nPolice officers are often overworked. They toil night and day to maintain law and order. Take this opportunity to recognize their hard work and bring them gifts. Homemade cookies or doughnuts are food ideas. \n  \n3. Show Some Ingenuity\nSince you are a human\, you have an advantage over other animals: your developed brain. If you have been working like a dog for a long time\, be inspired by the day and come up with a creative solution that reduces your effort. After all\, every invention in history was born out of necessity. \n  \nWHY WE LOVE WORK LIKE A DOG DAY\n  \nA. It Celebrates Perseverance\nIn a world dominated by get-rich-quick schemes\, it is important to remember that most times\, success comes after you have paid your dues (unless you are Kylie Jenner). \n  \nB. It Makes You Realize the Word ‘Dogged’ Comes From Dog\nSeriously\, while we were compiling this piece\, it dawned upon us: ‘dogged’ comes from dog and literally refers to dog-like qualities\, such as persistence\, determination\, and grit. \n  \nC. It Makes You Realize The Ingenuity of Humans\nWe hated walking long distances so we invented the wheel. We hated making things by hand so we invented industrial machines. Human history is full of examples where our brain has made onerous tasks easier\, so fewer people have to work like a dog.

SUMMARY:National Pet Fire Safety Day
DESCRIPTION:For many of us\, pets are our most precious asset so it makes sense that we would dedicate a day to keeping them safe during one of the scariest things we can imagine. National Pet Fire Safety Day takes place every year on July 15\, and it’s a day to learn how to keep your pet safe in a fire. It was started by the Kennel Club and ADT Security in 2009 to help pet owners learn safety measures to protect their beloved pets and homes from fire\, and it’s a great opportunity to learn how to keep your fur baby safe. \n  \nHOW TO OBSERVE NATIONAL PET FIRE SAFETY DAY\n  \n1. Get this useful decoration\nOn July 15\, get a free Pet Fire Safety Window Cling at your local volunteer firehouse. First responders will see this and know to look out for any pets inside. \n  \n2. Share it to save lives\nUse #PetFireSafetyDay to post on social media and raise awareness to friends and family about the day and ways that they can keep their pets safe from fires. \n  \n3. Have a fire drill\nFor families with kids\, this tradition is even more important. Discuss your family evacuation plan\, designate someone to carry out the pets and execute a fire drill on this day every year. \n  \nWHY NATIONAL PET FIRE SAFETY DAY IS IMPORTANT\n  \nA. Keep your pets out of trouble\nThere are many ways to keep your pet from causing fire. Blow out candles before leaving home\, block off access to kitchen or remove stove knobs if pets can reach it\, and keep any and all wires out of chewing distance\, especially from kittens and puppies! \n  \nB. Have a pet rescue plan in place\nDiscuss with your family who will be in charge of rescuing your pet in the event of a fire. Planning and practicing fire drills will help the family remain calm and help ensure that your pets are not forgotten during a chaotic evacuation. \n  \nC. Make rescuers aware of your pets and their hiding places\nAs part of your evacuation plan\, include a list of your pet’s hiding places\, so that firefighters will know where to look in case your pets don’t make it out with you. Also\, make sure your pets have collars with up to date tags attached in case they escape on their own.

SUMMARY:National Take Your Dog to Work Day
DESCRIPTION:Most of us dread the standard 8-to-5 workday\, and we can’t wait for the weekend to arrive. But if there’s one time during the year that you may look forward to Friday more than Saturday\, it’s probably during National Take Your Dog to Work Day\, which occurs on the Friday after Father’s Day each year. (Sometimes this is the third Friday in June\, and sometimes it’s the fourth Friday.) Now\, you’re going to have to make sure you have the permission of your boss and company before you bring Fido to work on National Take Your Dog to Work Day. \n  \nBut if you receive the green light from your company\, this holiday is a great way to show off your dog to your coworkers. National Take Your Dog to Work Day began in 1999 as a way to celebrate companion dogs and to encourage adoptions. Having your dog at work with you all day may make it a little tough to get all of your tasks done. But having the dog with you may allow you to interact with your coworkers in a whole new way\, as the dog is a great icebreaker. Pitch that idea of promoting better communication and teamwork to your boss\, and you may convince him or her to allow you to have Fido sitting next to your desk\, celebrating this holiday. \n  \n\nNATIONAL TAKE YOUR DOG TO WORK DAY ACTIVITIES\n  \n1. Participate in the holiday with your dog\nThis best way to have fun with National Take Your Dog to Work Day is to – not so surprisingly – take your dog to work on this day. As long as the boss is in favor of this holiday\, having a day with your dog at work should be fun … and may help you figure out which of your coworkers look like their dogs. (Scientists actually study this phenomenon and are paid to do so.) \n  \n2. Volunteer at an animal shelter\nEven if you don’t own a dog\, perhaps you can find a way to participate in this holiday by helping with dogs. Contact local animal shelters and offer to donate a few hours to walk dogs\, help with feeding\, or whatever tasks are needed. Consider asking if your company sponsors volunteer opportunities\, and you may be able to take half a day off to do the volunteer work. \n  \n3. Sign up for a training class\nIf you’re afraid your dog is too rambunctious to do well at your workplace\, use the holiday as the impetus to sign up for training classes. Your dog will be happier with the structure that training provides\, and you’ll be happier having an obedient dog. \n  \n\n\nWHY WE LOVE NATIONAL TAKE YOUR DOG TO WORK DAY\n  \nA. It celebrates dogs\nMany people love dogs\, and dog owners are always willing to talk about and show off their dogs. So having the ability to introduce your dog to your coworkers is a great way to celebrate your dog’s best traits. And who knows? You may find that your dog changes someone’s mind about how they feel about dogs. \n  \nB. It can make work fun … at least for one day\nThink back to your elementary school days and how much fun it was when something different was going to happen at school. Changing the standard day at the office by having people bring their dogs can do the same thing. People will be more excited about coming to work\, and they may actually stay all the way until 5 p.m. for a change. \n  \nC. It isn’t necessarily just for dogs\nEven if you don’t have a dog\, you can participate throughout the week leading up to the Friday after Father’s Day with Take Your Pet to Work Week. So if you have a parrot\, goldfish\, or something a bit more exotic\, check with your boss to see if you can bring your pet at some point during the week. (However\, we would recommend against bringing your cat to work on National Take Your Dog to Work Day – bring the cat earlier in the week on a different\, non-dog day.) \n\n

SUMMARY:Ugliest Dog Day
DESCRIPTION:Ugliest Dog Day on June 20 celebrates the pups out there with a face only a mother could love. But when it comes to man’s best friend\, is there really any dog that can’t be deemed adorable? We honor the facially challenged ones on June 20\, Ugliest Dog Day. What started as a fun contest has grown into an annual celebration of the not-so-handsome dogs amongst us. So grab your favorite pup and give him an extra snuggle today and as you go about your day\, say hi to every pup\, pretty and not so pretty. \n  \n\nUGLIEST DOG DAY ACTIVITIES\n  \n1. Share dog images\, ugly or not\nIn the days leading up to Ugliest Dog Day\, snap pictures of any and every dog you see. Put together a slide show of your neighborhood’s dogs\, out and about\, enjoying their doggie lives. Share on social media and invite friends to upload photos of their dogs too. \n  \n2. Raise money for homeless pets\nAt school or work\, you can help dogs that don’t have the luxury of a loving home. Hold a fundraiser or collect pet supplies to donate to your local animal shelter. Also consider becoming a volunteer or dog foster parent. \n  \n3. Hold your own dog contest\nUgly or adorable\, celebrate the dog in your and your friends’ lives. Be it a dog fashion show\, obstacle course race or best trick competition\, use June 20 to have a pet party and show off the awesomeness of your dog. \n  \nWHY WE LOVE UGLIEST DOG DAY\n  \nA. It celebrates what’s inside\, not outside\nDogs are loving\, loyal creatures. They don’t care how their humans look\, so why should we care about their perhaps less than perfect features? \n  \nB. It brings awareness to homeless pets\nUnfortunately\, dogs that may be considered not so cute often have a harder time being adopted. Remember your local pet shelter on Ugliest Dog Day with a donation of money or pet supplies. \n  \nC. It’s a chance to brag about your fabulous dog\nCute and cuddly or unappealing and smelly\, dog owners aren’t bothered and truly believe their dog is the best ever. Show-off your dog and give Fido some extra loving today with a special day devoted just to the two of you.

SUMMARY:National Pet Week
DESCRIPTION:No matter the time\, no matter the place\, no matter the day\, our pets always make the world a little brighter. Regardless to how tough things may seem\, pets eagerly provide comfort\, sympathy\, and unquestioned understanding when we most need it. This May 1-7\, celebrate National Pet Week by recognizing our fun loving family members who give us everything\, asking only for a smile in return…and maybe an occasional treat. \n  \nNATIONAL PET WEEK ACTIVITIES\n  \n1. Get outside\nOne of the greatest treats pets hope for is simply to get “out and about.” Take some time out of your busy schedule and enjoy the outdoors with your close friend who will be more than happy to lead the way. \n  \n2. Give a gift\nOur pets may differ from us in many ways\, but this is one thing we can all agree on – everyone loves presents. So treat your “hard working” friend with a little surprise for always being there for you. \n  \n3. Party with friends\nWho doesn’t like a good party? Get together with your two-legged friends\, invite them to bring along their four-legged counterparts\, and enjoy a beautiful spring day as you all toss your cares aside. \n  \nWHY WE LOVE NATIONAL PET WEEK\n  \nA. It reminds us of the “ones we’ve raised”\nOn the surface\, the success of our pets is based entirely on how we care for them. In the end\, how they behave\, interact\, and thrive is dependant on how we raise them\, and it makes us proud. \n  \nB. They’re the best listeners in the world\nIt’s human nature\, when told something\, to respond and ask questions. Really though\, sometimes we don’t want the answers to our most difficult questions right then and there. Sometimes\, we just want someone to listen. \n  \nC. They don’t judge\, about anything\, ever\nWhile they may live among us\, pets don’t truly live in the same world. They don’t care about wealth\, social status\, job titles\, or even looks. Pets are the most accepting beings on Earth.

SUMMARY:National Pet Month
DESCRIPTION:Did you that about 80 million homes in America have an animal family member? And about half of those households have more than one? Say “Hello” to National Pet Month in April. What a great way to celebrate how important our pets are! They make our social media much more entertaining—just think of all the funny cat videos. \n  \n\nNATIONAL PET MONTH ACTIVITIES\n  \n1. Visit the zoo\nTake an opportunity to learn about exotic creatures and their similarities to your own critter. If you can’t be bothered to pay the fee; go on a walk to enjoy the local wildlife. \n  \n2. Playing with your pet\nYou are their whole world. After a year or so\, they will not be able to remember a time without you in their lives. Setting aside an hour of your valuable time to entertain your pet is a small sacrifice for their happiness. \n  \n3. Troll the Internet for Animal GIFs\nIt will probably suck up hours of your life\, but the cuteness is worth it. Trust us. \n  \n\n\nWHY WE LOVE NATIONAL PET MONTH\n  \nA. It’s socially acceptable bragging time\nLet’s be real: most of us are determined to prove to everyone that our pet is the best out of all the animals we know. During National Pet Month\, people are at least resigned to this inevitability. Hopefully this makes us marginally less annoying when we wax poetic about the color of our bunny’s fur. \n  \nB. Opportunities to meet animals and their people\nSince everyone is out and about bragging about their pets\, it would come as no surprise to see more exotic animals like monkeys or parrots as well as dogs frequenting public parks and other pet-friendly venues. Meeting other animal-lovers or owners out and about is another perk. \n  \nC. It’s a great excuse to spoil your pet\nLike you need one\, but it’s still nice to have an excuse to buy your pet presents both of you can enjoy together. So get that adorable sweater for your cat to hate or even that collection of multi-colored tennis balls for your dog to destroy.

SUMMARY:International Guide Dog Day
DESCRIPTION:Each April\, we celebrate International Guide Dog Day. Dogs have long been identified as “man’s best friend\,” but some canines go above and beyond the call of duty by working as service dogs – helping those with visual impairments make their way through the world and providing love and comfort in other ways. References to guide dogs date back to at least the 16th century\, so for the hundreds of years of service that these faithful companions have provided\, we say thank you on April 25 to commemorate International Guide Dog Day\, celebrated each year on the last Wednesday of April. \n  \nHOW TO OBSERVE INTERNATIONAL GUIDE DOG DAY\n  \n1. Learn what it takes to train a service dog\nIt can take months or even years to properly train a guide dog\, as more goes into helping their handlers safely navigate streets\, shops or other locations than one might initially thing. For one thing\, guide dogs are taught to recognize whether or not a command would put their handler in danger and instructed to disobey such instructions. That’s not an easy thing to teach a pet! \n  \n2. Support organizations that train guide dogs and pair them with humans\nThere are several organizations throughout the world that train guide dogs and match them with people who are blind or suffering from visual impairment\, and like other nonprofit organizations\, they could benefit from your time and/or donations. These organizations include Guide Dogs for the Blind\, the Guide Dog Foundation\, and the National Association of Guide Dog Users. \n  \n3. Do something nice for a special guide dog that you know\nNot all of us are lucky enough to know a specially-trained guide dog\, but for those lucky enough to be so blessed\, International Guide Dog Day would be a great time to do something special for that faithful companion. Perhaps you could purchase them a special toy or treat – but if you want to do something for a guide dog\, be sure you check with his/her hander first! \n  \nWHY INTERNATIONAL GUIDE DOG DAY IS IMPORTANT\n  \nA. Guide dogs help the visually impaired live full lives\nMore than 140 million people in the United States alone are blind or suffer from some sort of vision impairment\, according to Prevent Blindness America. Properly-trained guide dogs help those men and women remain safe and independently mobile by helping them avoid obstacles\, know when to cross streets and guiding them through busy malls and supermarkets. \n  \nB. It provides an opportunity to recognize guide dog trainers\nGuide dog training can be an expensive and time-consuming process. Some reports indicate that it can take up to two years and $25\,000 to fully train a single service canine. In addition to giving folks an opportunity to recognize the work of guide dogs themselves\, International Guide Dog Day lets us also offer a tip of the cap to the dedicated men and women who train them. \n  \nC. It celebrates dogs – what’s not to love?\nDogs are called “man’s best friend” for a reason – men and women all over the world cherish their beloved canine companions\, whether they are specially trained as service animals or not. Any opportunity to celebrate these faithful animals is one that’s well worth capitalizing on!

SUMMARY:National Pet Day
DESCRIPTION:If you consider your pet a member of the family\, you are definitely not alone—six out of ten pet owners feel the same way! In fact\, two-thirds of Americans have pets and the ASPCA estimates that there are 70-80 million dogs and 74-96 million cats owned in the U.S alone. Fish\, birds\, gerbils\, and turtles are not far behind too. There is one thing fur-sure—Americans truly love pets and National Pet Day is the purr-fect excuse to obsess over our furry\, feathery\, or scaly friends on April 11!  \nNATIONAL PET DAY ACTIVITIES\n  \n1. Have a fur family dinner\nMake a reservation at a dog-friendly restaurant\, post up in a cat cafe\, or prepare a pet-friendly meal at home. The paw-sibilities are endless! \n  \n2. Catch up on the classics\nRemember Marley and Me or Lady and the Tramp? Or even more recent movies\, like Zootopia or The Secret Life of Pets? Cuddle up with your furry friend and watch your favorite animal movie. Hey\, they might even understand the parts with barks and meows\, right? \n  \n3. Have a photoshoot\nCapture your favorite moments with your pet with a playful photoshoot. Post the funniest photo from the shoot on social media—who knows\, maybe they’ll become internet famous! \n  \nWHY WE LOVE NATIONAL PET DAY\n  \nA. They make the best companions\nPets make the most loving and devoted creatures. They cure our loneliness and stress\, mold their schedules to us\, and often become integral members of our families. Their love is for paw-ternity. \n  \nB. They help us keep up with routines\nLoving and caring for a pet brings structure and meaning to our lives. Scheduling walks\, playdates\, and feeding times allows us to plan our days with discipline\, makes us more likely to stick to routines\, and teaches us time management skills. Sometimes our pets can be the reason we get out of bed each morning. What makes a better motivator than our favorite furry friends? \n  \nC. They bring meaning to our life\nAt the end of the day\, having a pet means that you have invested in another life. You develop a mutual dependency upon each other and there is nothing more rewarding than knowing that you are needed and loved. They are paws-itively amazing.

SUMMARY:National Hug Your Dog Day
DESCRIPTION:Our dogs deserve all the love and affection we can give\, which is why there is a special day dedicated just to hugging them. Every year on April 10 is National Hug Your Dog Day. It was started by Ami Moore\, famed “Dog Whisperer of Chicago\,” who wanted to remind the world how human’s oldest friend and pet deserves an extra thank you for all the joy they bring into our lives. So grab your dog and give them an extra squeeze today! \n  \n\nNATIONAL HUG YOUR DOG DAY ACTIVITIES\n  \n1. Go for a walk\nTake your dog for an extra long walk today or even to a local dog park. After seeing how happy it makes them\, you’ll be wondering why you don’t do it more often. \n  \n2. Go on a doggie date\nBring your pup to a dog-friendly restaurant to show them how grateful you are for how grateful they are. Some restaurants have special dog biscuits or will cook up some special meat so that you and your canine can dine together. If they’re an extra good dog\, take them out for some ice cream after\, just don’t give them too much. \n  \n3. Squeeze a little tighter\nIn honor of your pet on this sacred day\, hold them tight\, give them an extra long belly rub and cuddle them on the floor or couch while you watch your favorite dog movie together. \n  \n\n\nWHY WE LOVE NATIONAL HUG YOUR DOG DAY\n  \nA. Dogs deserve a special thank you\nIn addition to being unconditional lovers and expert cuddlers\, dogs serve humans in many ways by holding important jobs\, including jobs that humans are physically incapable of doing\, such as sniffing for drugs and bombs. \n  \nB. Dogs love to be loved\nHistorically\, dogs are pack animals which is why they hate being alone. Hence the barking\, howling\, chewing on your favorite shoes when you’re not home. When you adopt a pet\, you are their pack\, so cut them some slack for forgetting personal space and give them an extra tight squeeze today. \n  \nC. Dogs are grateful\nBesides that famous painting\, dogs do not have a poker face. Just you coming home is enough to make their day. With many dogs\, just the mention of the word walk is enough to get them racing. That wagging tail and smiley pant is also all the thanks you need.

SUMMARY:National Puppy Day
DESCRIPTION:Prepare yourselves for an overdose of cuteness\, because March 23rd is National Puppy Day! Established in 2006\, National Puppy Day is a paw-some day for all dog enthusiasts to celebrate puppies’ unconditional love and fawn over the undeniable cute furballs that bring so much joy into this world. While we’re all softies when it comes to cute photos of our four-legged friends\, today is also designed to raise awareness about puppy mills and help prospective pet owners consider adoption. Sit back\, relax\, and indulge in the endless stream of adorable puppy photos\, but keep in mind that today might be the best excuse to bring home a fluffy canine as your next best friend!  \n\n\nNATIONAL PUPPY DAY ACTIVITIES\n  \n1. Teach your pup a new trick\nIn their young age\, puppies are always open to new things and teaching a trick can be a great learning experience for both of you. Activities like these can help further develop your puppy’s social skills and even strengthen your companionship—your pup will enjoy the extra treats along the way too! \n  \n2. Pamper your pup\nSometimes your pup is worthy of a 5-star spa treatment. Start with a bubble bath and end with a grooming session to bring out their baby soft coat. An extra belly rub can’t hurt too—your pooch will be sure to thank you later! \n  \n3. Look at photos and videos of adorable puppies\nPuppies are always the best medicine\, no matter your state of mind. There are so many you might be at it for a while. \n  \nWHY WE LOVE NATIONAL PUPPY DAY\n  \nA. They’re Great Listeners\nPuppies are a judge-free\, guilt-free zone. No matter how big or how small the problem\, they’re always there to comfort and lick your problems away. \n  \nB. They Sniff Out Health Problems\nStudies show that babies raised in close contact with a puppy get sick less often than those who aren’t. Not only do they help build up our immune system against allergens but their strong sense of empathy promotes a stress-free\, nurturing environment. Puppies can help shed and sniff your way to better health. \n  \nC. They Keep Us Active and Stress-Free\nLet’s face it\, puppies can be a handful\, but chasing them has surprising health benefits. They keep us constantly exercising\, which helps reduce stress\, anxiety\, and depression. Who knew puppies could help us revamp our workout routine?

SUMMARY:National K9 Veterans Day
DESCRIPTION:Are you excited for National K9 Veterans Day this March 13\, or are we barking up the wrong tree? Our little furry friends are already awesome as it is. But dogs who have been trained to serve our country are even more heroic. Plus\, they look so cute and serious in their little uniforms. K9 dogs have been around ever since 1942\, when an organization called Dogs for Defense was founded to train dogs to be sentries for supply depots. The program was approved by the U.S. Army in March 1942\, the U.S. Army K9 Corps was founded on March 13\, 1942\, and the rest is history (literally). Get ready to celebrate America’s patriotic puppers!  \n\n\nHOW TO OBSERVE NATIONAL K9 VETERANS DAY\n  \n1. Adopt a retired K9 dog\nK9 dogs are loved and appreciated\, but unfortunately\, there are some that are left without homes after their service ends. If you’re ready for a new pooch\, adopt one of these dogs instead of buying one from a breeder! One organization that helps you find these dogs is linked here. \n  \n2. Give your own pooch a treat\nWhile we’d love to give every retired K9 dog some TLC this holiday\, sometimes you can’t locate one for the purposes of treat-giving. If that’s the case\, show your own furry friend how much you love him! He’ll appreciate it\, and you’ll be honoring the spirit of the holiday. It’s a win-win! \n  \n3. Teach your dog a new trick\nOld dogs can’t learn new tricks — but your dog can! Celebrate the incredible training of a K9 dog by training your own dog a bit. You’ll have an excuse to spend time with your dog\, and you’ll feel great when you finally get him to perform the trick. Try starting out with getting your dog to roll over or shake your hand. \n  \n\n\nWHY NATIONAL K9 VETERANS DAY IS IMPORTANT\n  \nA. They’re here to protect us\nDogs already bring us such joy by being lovable and loyal. However\, they bring us even more joy when they’re working toward justice. From the first sentry dogs in Dogs of Defense to dogs that are trained to sniff out contraband or follow criminals\, K9 dogs can do it all. And they have. Historically\, K9 dogs have comprised Search and Rescue teams at Ground Zero\, served as Security Dogs\, and more. We thank them for their service! \n  \nB. They’re adorable as anything\nYou know the expression “there’s nothing cuter than a man in uniform?” We’d like to adapt that\, because whoever coined it was clearly talking about dogs. We have two points to back up this argument. Firstly\, there’s something so precious about how serious K9 dogs gets when they’re doing their jobs. Secondly\, they get tiny little police vests. Case closed. \n  \nC. They’re incredibly well-trained\nIn a time where some parents can’t even get their own children to regularly take out the trash\, K9 dogs are impeccably trained. Don’t believe us? Some K9s are trained to bite down on the arms of criminals to keep them in place upon command. However\, the dogs are not allowed to draw blood. So they know exactly how hard to bite down to hold without being violent. That’s incredible! K9 dogs\, we salute you.

SUMMARY:National Walking the Dog Day
DESCRIPTION:February 22 is National Walking the Dog Day! This day combines two of the most happy-making things we have in this life: dogs and exercise. Humans love walking with their four-legged friends\, and pooches love their strolls with their people. So grab your walking shoes\, a leash\, and some treats for the road\, and take your favorite pooch for a stroll to celebrate National Walking the Dog Day!  \n\n\nNATIONAL WALKING THE DOG DAY ACTIVITIES\n  \n1. Share a special treat\nDogs love their treats\, and one special way of rewarding them on this day is by providing a unique dog snack for them during their walk. Keep some treats in your pocket for spontaneous snack breaks or reward them with a favorite snack at home. \n  \n2. Try a different trail\nDogs love exploring new terrain. If you are a city dweller\, venture out to the nearest nature park\, or simply try a different route than normal. Your dog will love exploring the new sights\, scents\, and sounds. \n  \n3. Take a walk\nDon’t have a dog of your own to walk on National Walking the Dog Day? Maybe it’s time to remedy that by visiting your local animal shelter. Take some dogs in need of adoption on a stroll\, or even better\, ask about adopting\, and enjoy walking the dog\, every day. \n  \n\n\nWHY WE LOVE NATIONAL WALKING THE DOG DAY\n  \nA. The perfect start to the day\nIs there any better way to begin the day than by going on a walk with your dog? Picture a cup of coffee in your hand\, your dog’s leash in the other\, dew on the grass and the sun coming up over the rooftops. It’s a great way to get your blood flowing\, your mind moving\, and for you and your dog to get some light exercise before breakfast. \n  \nB. The best bonding exercise\nWalking the dog offers an opportunity for dogs and their people to connect while exploring the neighborhood together. A dog on a walk is also a great way for humans to meet each other\, and for dogs to socialize with other animals out on walks of their own. \n  \nC. A well-walked dog is a calm dog\nDogs have a lot of energy and need to exert it daily. If a dog has not been walked\, he may become restless and cause chaos around the home. We love taking our dogs for as many walks as possible to ensure that their time at home is relaxing and restful.

SUMMARY:National Love Your Pet Day
DESCRIPTION:On February 20\, we celebrate National Love Your Pet Your Pet Day\, a day to embrace one special trait that makes us human: our love of our pets! There are many things that differentiate humans from the rest of the animal kingdom\, but one of the more unusual behaviors is our longstanding tendency to keep other animals as pets. While there have been a handful of other animals that have been observed keeping pets — Koko the gorilla and her cats are one well-known example — we’re the only species where it’s a common occurrence. Gallup reports that sixty percent of Americans are current pet owners. It only makes sense to commemorate something that’s so important to so many people\, so on February 20\, we celebrate our pets with Love Your Pet Day! \n  \nNATIONAL LOVE YOUR PET DAY ACTIVITIES\n  \n1. Show your pet something new\nJust like us\, our pets love seeing new places! Has your dog ever been to the beach? If not\, consider taking a road trip to celebrate National Love Your Pet Day. Change up the location of your fish’s bowl\, take your guinea pig on a tour of the house\, or take your chameleon on a field trip to the porch to feel the breeze on his face. \n  \n2. Spoil them\nLet’s face it: spoiling our pets is a lot of fun. So do it! Birthdays might only come once a year\, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have more special days with your pets. Celebrate National Love Your Pet Day by bringing home a new treat or toy\, whipping up a beloved meal\, or simply spend some extra quality time with your pet (we suggest pet-themed movies as an especially nice activity). \n  \n3. Adopt a pet\nThe ultimate way to celebrate Love Your Pet Day is to get a pet of your own to love! If it’s within your means\, consider adopting a pet in need of a home. Explore local organizations that rescue and re-home animals in your area. It’ll change your life in ways you never expected. \n  \nWHY WE LOVE NATIONAL LOVE YOUR PET DAY\n  \nA. They’re great listeners\nIt’s not often that we can find a companion willing to sit through all of our complaints\, but our pets never get sick of hearing our grievances. They are also delighted to listen to our favorite anecdotes (like say\, that time we adopted our cat) and will never roll their eyes when we repeat a favorite story. \n  \nB. They make you feel good\nThat warm feeling you get after rolling around with your dog or that sense of peace you feel when you have a cat in your lap? It’s not just a feeling\, it’s science. Spending time with animals is a great way to get a boost in feel-good hormones and has even been shown to improve blood pressure. \n  \nC. They’re adorable\nJust like children\, everyone thinks that they’ve got the most adorable pet. It’s easy to see why\, though — they’re all pretty darn cute! Lizards\, hermit crabs\, gerbils\, cats\, dogs\, birds — we all need someone to love\, and when that someone is a living thing that needs our care\, looks don’t matter\, just that they love us back.

SUMMARY:Doggy Date Night
DESCRIPTION:You’re working all day\, out running errands\, or spending time with your family and loved ones. How about slowing down to spend some quality time with the one who is always there for you: your dog! Take the chance to hang out with your pup on Doggy Date Night on February 3. \n  \nPeople have kept dogs as pets for 12\,000 years\, and with good reason! They are steadfast companions and there are enough types (more than 150 breeds!) out there for everyone. Dogs can live for as many as 15 years\, making them a significant part of their owner’s life. For years\, scientists have studied the special connection between dogs and humans\, consistently finding that dogs provide social and emotional benefits for their owner\, and the bond promotes a positive well-being for both the owner and the dog. \n  \nThey don’t call them man’s best friend for nothing: dogs are loyal\, protective\, and always excited to see you! On this February 3\, spend a little extra time with your dog: play games like fetch or Frisbee\, or go on a nice long hike! Go beyond the standard walks and couch snuggles and make an event out of it to make your pooch feel special! \n  \n\nDOGGY DATE NIGHT ACTIVITIES\n  \n1. Hit the town\nFirst\, head to the park for a big game of fetch and some wide open spaces. Take a couple of selfies of you and the pup to commemorate the occasion. After you are worn out from playing\, find a dog-friendly patio at a restaurant for some dinner. Then\, for dessert\, take your dog to a local bakery just for them. They’ll be in heaven over all the cakes\, treats\, and bones for their choosing. Make sure to post your pictures and use the event’s hashtag on Twitter: #DoggyDateNight. \n  \n2. Check out some canine art\nThe American Kennel Club Museum of the Dog in St. Louis\, MO holds the largest collection dog-related art in the country. Take a trip to check out some of the pieces\, including a permanent collection of All-Star Dogs and dogs of war. They also host a “Guest Dog of the Week” exhibit\, in which dogs and their owners are on hand to meet with museum patrons. There’s even a doggy bakery that caters! \n  \n3. Have a spa day\nPrimping and pampering are not just for people! Celebrate Doggy Date Night with a little indulgence for you and your pooch. Dip your hands in moisturizing lotion\, and apply some shea butter to your dog’s paws and nose! Then try out all the spa products designed just for dogs: facial scrubs\, perfume\, and even nail polish! \n  \n\n\nWHY WE LOVE DOGGY DATE NIGHT\n  \nA. Dogs are good for us\nThe benefits of having a dog reach far and wide. They can be good for your mind\, body\, and spirit! In fact\, research has shown that spending just 15 minutes playing with your pup can help you feel more relaxed. It also releases serotonin\, improving your mood! Research has also shown lower levels of blood pressure and cholesterol in dog owners. And\, they’ve gotta walk\, so you do\, too! Having a dog helps owners stay active and get outside. \n  \nB. Dogs understand you on a deep level\nPart puppy-intuition\, part their incredible sense of smell\, dogs can pick up on how you are feeling\, making them sensitive to your needs. Dogs can smell 40-50 times more than humans\, which enables them to identify the changing body chemistries of people who are sick\, stressed\, or even pregnant. In many cases\, dogs have been known to recognize cancer or cases of diabetes in their owners. \n  \nC. They are fascinating creatures\nThey come in all shapes and sizes (some as small as two pounds!)\, and are descendants of wolves! They have hearing abilities that are ten times more accurate than the average person. They can be trained as service animals for the visually-impaired or those with physical disabilities\, and are even used as sources of comfort for individuals with social anxieties. America\, the top favorite dog breeds are Labradors\, Golden Retrievers\, and German Shepherds.

SUMMARY:National Dress Up Your Pet Day
DESCRIPTION:It’s National Dress Up Your Pet Day on January 14\, and we want you go to all out. Celebrate by dressing up your furry family member in comfortable pet clothing — maybe even get matching outfits\, if you want to get crazy. If it were any normal day\, people would be staring at you at your dog in the street. However\, on National Dress Up Your Pet Day\, matching outfits are not only accepted\, but also encouraged! Who’s the angel responsible for this holiday? National Dress Up Your Pet Day was started in 2009 by celebrity pet lifestyle expert and animal behaviorist Colleen Paige. It celebrates pets and helps to support the pet fashion community. The chance only comes once a year to wow the neighbors and to unleash the inner diva of your favorite pooch\, so make sure your dog is dressed for the occasion!  \n\n\nNATIONAL DRESS UP YOUR PET DAY ACTIVITIES\n  \n1. Have a friend take photos of you and your pet’s new outfits\nDid you even dress up your dog if you didn’t take a picture of it? You need to commemorate you and your dog looking styling! Have a mini-photoshoot\, and upload the pictures to your social media. Or\, if your friends aren’t nice enough to indulge you\, take a selfie\, or 3\, or 10. Either way\, the moment is captured. \n  \n2. Use #DressUpYourPetDay on Facebook\, Twitter\, and Instagram\nIn case you live under a rock\, we have a memo for you: the internet is extremely creative! Search this hashtag to see how other dog owners have dressed up their dogs in the past. You’ll get inspired immediately. And who knows? You might start some friendly competition! We believe in you; you’ll win! \n  \n3. If you have kids\, but no pets\, dress them up instead.\nThe FOMO doesn’t have to be real. If you don’t have pets\, you can dress up your children instead! And if you really want to stick with the theme\, you can grab a friend’s dog and go wild. I’m sure your friends wouldn’t mind you babysitting their dogs for a couple hours! \n  \n\n\nWHY WE LOVE NATIONAL DRESS UP YOUR PET DAY\n  \nA. Clothes can reveal your pet’s personality\nPeople dress up to show off their personality. So why shouldn’t your pet do the same? Whether your dog is flirtatious\, tough\, smart or sassy\, she deserves an outfit that matches her persona. Your diva dog can get a pink\, bedazzled sweatshirt. Your tough dog can get a doggy crew neck sweater. The options are endless\, and we want you to try them all! (And we’re sure your dog does too.) \n  \nB. Celebrating holidays is more fun with your pet\nEven something as silly as spending a day dressing up your pet is quality time\, and your pet relishes it. Sorry\, did we say silly? We meant amazing. Your pet will love that you’re spending time together\, and your friends will love that you posted it on the ‘Gram. Facebook and Instagram likes\, here you come! Your picture might even impress that cute guy or girl you’ve been eyeing. \n  \nC. It’s probably cold outside anyway\nIt’s still January\, which means that many places are experiencing cold weather right now. And remember: dogs get cold too! Just as you’re not supposed to walk your dog when it’s too hot\, you need to put a sweater on your dog when it’s too cold. So protect your dog from the winter elements by showing some National Dress Up Your Dog Day pride. Treat your fur-baby with that extra layer of warmth\, and make sure it is comfortable for them to walk around in!
